Enlarged male breasts, or gynaecomastia, is a condition that can affect up to 40-60% of men. Not only the breasts cause discomfort and are painful, gynaecomastia can also cause significant self-consciousness and these men can become so self-aware that they avoid tight tops or going topless in public places.
Gynaecomastia can be normal in pubescent boys, an estimated levels of 60-70% of boys may have gynaecomastia to some degree, this relates to the changes in levels of specific hormones during the growth spur phase. As their growth stabilise, the hormone levels stabilise and the enlarged breasts usually resolve.
With adult gynaecomastia, causation can be multifactorial. During your appointment, you can discuss what factors may have been relevant in your situation.
Candidate for Surgery?
It is important to differentiate if the gynaecomastia is true glandular hypertrophy, or if it is due to weight gain. It is important for the weight to be stable for at least 6 months. If lifestyle factors have contributed to gynaecomastia, Dr Kwei may recommend against surgery, as the causative reasons are still present.
The presence of gynaecomastia is usually confirmed when a firm, rubbery mass is felt underneath the nipple area, which is often quite sensitive when pressure is applied. This is also confirmed with ultrasound imaging modality.
Gynaecomastia Reduction Surgery
The surgery involves both an excisional and a liposuction component, and rarely, in the very full gynaecomastia patients, a skin excision is required to get the desired result.
The procedure will take 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the degree of gynaecomastia and is done at a fully accredited facility or at the practice, if appropriate.
The recovery is usually not strenuous, the swelling and discomfort may last up to 2 weeks but settles relatively quick. You should be able to recommence light duties after a week and back into exercise in approximately a month. A compression vest needs to be worn to allow the chest conform to the new contours.
CHOOSE YOUR SURGEON WISELY
It is important to be sure that your Surgeon is qualified not only to perform the procedure, but to deal with all aspects around the surgery and its results. And also for the surgery to be carried out at a fully accredited hospital / day surgery.
